Where to Surf and Stay Like a Local in Wategos

We uncover where's best to surf check, from your suite.

Waking up in Wategos, the locals are out surfing, dogs are out playing, and people are migrating to do the walk up to the Cape Byron lighthouse. Wategos Beach is one of those magical spots. It's a locals' type of place, as much for its history as for its laid-back mix of surfers and tourists enjoying the spectacular view from atop the headland high above.

However, it's no secret that the infamous Byronshire has a serious reputation for being a surf haven. Whether you're a pro or a beginner, there are more than eleven popular (and often crowded) surf breaks to keep you riding the wave. Of them all, 'Wategos' or neighbouring 'The Pass' are popular for those more experienced to snag some fantastic right-hand points during the warmer months. True, both locations are a bit further out—a 30 minute walk from the centre of town—but that's exactly what makes it so special. Here, the transient crowds thin out, and you can enjoy a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere.

For those who really want to get away from it all, our tip is to push that little further along to Little Wategos. Located at the southern and eastern tip of Byron Bay, it's the final beach on the cape and offers stunning views and beautiful waves. While it's not recommended for strong SE swells due to the lack of protection from the headland, anything in the 3-5 foot range with E in the compass is absolutely perfect for a glassy ride.

Locay explores the top 3 accommodations in Wategos Beach, where you can taste the salty air and fall asleep listening to the sound of crashing waves. You really can’t get any closer if you try.
